API's Individual Certification Programs (ICP)

Qualification of Ultrasonic Testing Examiners
Skilled technicians use nondestructive examination (NDE) methods for reliably and safely detecting features or flaws that may impact natural gas and oil industry operations. Qualified and knowledgeable ultrasonic testing UT technicians are fundamental components to any mechanical integrity plan. API provides industry-supported and expert-reviewed examinations to assess the performance of UT technicians.
API offers the following NDE Certifications:
The certification focuses on manually detecting, sizing, and characterizing flaws and features in carbon steel shielded metal arc (SMAW) butt welds.
-
Determine early warning of failure for critical equipment
-
Evaluate component integrity by assessing defect magnitude
- Increase accuracy and sensitivity in flaw detection methods
The API QUTE-TM (Thickness Measurement) certification evaluates ability to determine equipment wall loss and other damage mechanisms capable of being detected and monitored by straight beam ultrasonic thickness measurement instrumentation and techniques.
-
Increase safety awareness by verifying wall thickness monitoring and equipment’s structural integrity
-
Examine materials exposed to high heat and corrosive pressure to prevent accidents
The API QUTE (Phased Array) certification focuses on ultrasonic phased array methods to detect, size, and characterize flaws and features in carbon steel shielded metal arc (SMAW) butt welds.
-
Minimize risk of failure/breakdowns by increasing flaw detection
-
Improve inspection rates by scanning larger surface areas at a time magnitude
-
Reduce risk of liability by ensuring equipment is safe for in-service use
The API LSP (Long Seam Pipeline) certification focuses on detection, characterization and sizing features on long seam pipeline welds.
-
Increase weld coverage and sensitivity to the fl aw for long seam, or axial, welds
-
Improve probability of detection of vertically positioned fl aw due to curved interfaces in the pipe
-
Help pipeline operators improve reliance of in-the-ditch NDE results and the ability to calibrate in-line-inspection tools
